To size a light fixture, add your room's length and width in feet. That sum is the fixture diameter in inches, so a 12 x 12 ft room takes a fixture around 24 inches (60 cm) wide. For a single pendant over a table or countertop, use the surface width and subtract 30 cm (12 inches). Keep the bottom of any fixture at least 2.1 m (7 ft) above the floor.

How Pendant & Ceiling Lights Are Measured

Fixture height and overall drop are two different numbers, and online orders go wrong when a shopper reads one as the other.

• Diameter is measured at the widest point of the shade, not the opening at the bottom. On a basket-style rattan shade, the widest point usually sits about 2/3 of the way up the body, not at the rim.
• Fixture height covers the shade body only. It does not include the cord, chain, or stem. This is the number the ceiling-height formula below is built around.
• Overall drop runs from the ceiling to the bottom of the shade, cord included. This number determines whether a fixture clears a countertop or doorway, so it matters more than fixture height when you're buying online. IndochinaLight ships a default cord of around 120 cm, and you can shorten it during installation or customize it before shipping if you need a specific drop for your ceiling height.
• Canopy diameter is the plate that sits against the ceiling. It matters most when you're replacing an existing fixture and need to cover an old mounting hole.

One more thing to know before you shop: hand-woven shades have a size tolerance of roughly 1 to 2 cm between pieces of the same model, since each one is woven by hand rather than cast from a mold. Read the sizes below as a range, not a fixed number.

How to Calculate the Right Size

2 formulas cover almost every situation. One sizes the fixture to the room, the other sizes it to whatever furniture sits beneath it.

• Sizing to the room: add the room's length and width in feet. Read the result in inches as the fixture diameter. A 12 x 10 ft room points to a 22-inch fixture, which is 56 cm. Use this version when the fixture is the main light source for the whole room rather than one piece of furniture.
• Sizing to a surface: take the width of the table or island in centimeters and subtract 30 cm, or aim for 1/2 to 2/3 of the surface width. An island that's 120 cm deep takes a fixture up to about 90 cm, or a cluster of smaller shades that add up to roughly that width. Use this version whenever the fixture hangs over a specific table, counter, or island.

If a room already has furniture, size to the surface rather than the room. The eye compares a hanging fixture to the object directly beneath it before it compares the fixture to the room as a whole, so that ratio reads as "right" first.

Both formulas are a starting point, not a hard rule. Before you commit to a size, test it in the actual space. Inflate a balloon to the diameter you're considering, tie it to a length of string, and tape it to the ceiling where the fixture will hang. Stand at the doorway and at the spot where you'll sit or work most often. A fixture that reads as a small dot from across the room is undersized; one that feels like it's pressing down on you is oversized, or its body is too deep for the ceiling height.

One adjustment applies specifically to woven shades. Light passes through a rattan or bamboo weave, spilling sideways as well as down and casting patterns across the ceiling and walls that extend the fixture's visual reach well past its physical edge. Because of that spread, it's reasonable to size a woven shade one band smaller than either formula above suggests, roughly 5 to 10 cm under the calculated diameter, and still end up with a fixture that fills the space. Standard Pendant Light Sizes

Pendant lights fall into 5 broad size bands. Most homes end up somewhere between Small and Large.

A 3-inch (7.6 cm) pendant sits below even the Mini band on this chart. That size reads correctly only in a cluster of 3 or more, never as a single fixture.

What Size Pendant Over a Kitchen Island

For an 8 ft (244 cm) island, 2 pendants around 45 cm (18 in) each, or 3 smaller ones around 30 to 35 cm, spaced 60 to 75 cm apart, is the setup that reads as balanced. That 60-75 cm spacing and the 18-inch reference point both come from what we see work best across our own kitchen island pendant collection.

The table doesn't show 2 more measurements: leave at least 15 cm (6 in) between the outermost pendant and the edge of the island, and keep the cluster's combined width under 2/3 of the island's total length. Hang the pendants 76 to 91 cm (30 to 36 in) above the countertop, measured from the bottom of the shade.

What Size Pendant Over a Dining Table

Size the fixture to the table, not the room. Aim for 1/2 to 2/3 of the table's width.

• Round tables: choose a diameter equal to half to 2/3 of the table's diameter. A 120 cm round table takes a single pendant of 60 to 80 cm. One larger fixture usually reads better here than a cluster.
• Oval tables: size to the table's width rather than its length. A single large pendant or 2 medium ones both work.
• Rectangular tables: 2 to 3 pendants spaced evenly along the length, or 1 linear fixture, both work well. Keep the combined width of the cluster under 2/3 of the table's length.

Leave at least 15 cm (6 in) of clear space between the edge of the shade and the edge of the table on every side, so the fixture doesn't sit in anyone's sightline while they're seated. Hang the fixture 76 cm (30 in) above the tabletop as a starting point, then adjust based on ceiling height.

How Many Pendants and How Far Apart

Divide the length of the surface, whether it's an island or a dining table, by the number of pendants plus one. The result is the center-to-center spacing.

For a 300 cm table with 3 pendants, that's 300 divided by 4, which is 75 cm. The same table with 4 pendants gives 300 divided by 5, which is 60 cm. This spacing is measured from the middle of 1 shade to the middle of the next, not the gap between the shade edges.

An odd number of pendants (1, 3, or 5) centers naturally over the middle of a table or island, which is why it's the more common choice. An even number still works, but it needs to be positioned symmetrically around the center rather than starting from one end. Check your math against reality before you order: if the spacing you calculate comes out smaller than the diameter of a single pendant, drop the count by one and recalculate.

Pendant Height by Ceiling Height

On a 9 ft (2.7 m) ceiling, a pendant body between 45 and 68 cm (18 to 27 in) reads as correctly proportioned.

The formula: take the ceiling height in feet, multiply by 2 and by 3, and read both results in inches. That range is the fixture body height to shop for. This is the shade's own height, not the overall drop covered earlier, so measure the product's listed "fixture height" against this table rather than the cord length.

Sizing Your Pendant as a Flush Mount

Ceiling height decides this: a fixture hung with a cord suits most ceilings, but on ceilings under about 2.4 m (8 ft), switching to a flush mount, where the shade sits directly against the ceiling instead of hanging on a cord, protects headroom.

Hardwired and plug-in versions hang on a cord, which also makes them the better choice for sloped ceilings, since the cord settles straight down under its own weight. The flush-mount option removes the cord and sits directly against the ceiling, which requires a flat surface to seat properly. When you flush-mount a pendant shade, the sizing formulas above still apply. The room or table formula still sets the diameter, and the standard size bands still apply. What changes is the drop: instead of an adjustable cord, the shade sits within a few centimeters of the ceiling, so double-check your chosen size against the room's ceiling height using the table above before committing to the flush option over the hanging one.

A practical note on scale: on a ceiling below 2.4 m, an Oversized shade from the chart above can start to feel heavy overhead even when flush-mounted, simply because there's so little air space left between the fixture and eye level. On low ceilings, the Medium or Large band from the standard sizes chart usually reads better than sizing strictly to the room-size formula.
